(Translated from the papyrus by Joseph Smith)
by Joyce Kinmont
These are my favorite passages of scripture about the purpose of earth life and the preparations our Father made for us here.
4:26 And the Gods took counsel among themselves and said: Let us go down and form man in our image, after our likeness; and we will give them dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So the Gods went down to organize man in their own image, in the image of the Gods to form they him, male and female to form they them.
28 And the Gods said: We will bless them. And the Gods said: We will cause them to be fruitful and multiply, and replenish [fill] the earth, and subdue it, and to have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And the Gods said: Behold, we will give them every herb bearing seed that shall come upon the face of all the earth, and every tree which shall have fruit upon it; yea, the fruit of the tree yielding seed to them we will give it; it shall be for their meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, behold, we will give them life, and also we will give to them every green herb for meat, and all these things shall be thus organized.
All this for us. For our happiness. We are beloved children of Heavenly parents. We are made in their image, male and female, and blessed with the ability to have children, which is the most important thing going on here on Earth.
We were given dominion over the animal kingdom to bless us and to give us practice in proper governance, We were given plant foods to fuel our bodies and to keep us healthy, capable, wise, and beautiful of spirit, like our Parents. That diet matters more than we have realized.
Every child wants to be like his parents. We want to be like ours. Our children want to be like us. We come to Earth with that desire built into us both consciously and unconsciously.
The last verse says:
31 And the Gods said: We will do everything that we have said, and organize them; and behold, they shall be very obedient.
That one always makes me laugh, but it isn’t funny.
We should be obedient. Eat plants, fill the earth with children, and take good care of the animals. “The Gods'” greatest desire, and His Glory, is our happiness.
The ultimate end of all activity in the Church is that a man and his wife and their children
might be happy at home, protected by the principles and laws of the gospel, sealed
safely in the covenants of the everlasting priesthood.

God’s purpose is “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. . . As you
consistently focus your life on the most basic principles . . . you will produce
more fruit for the Lord and more happiness for yourself.
